Rule 82. Identification of deponent

82.1 The rule

If the deponent is not known to the attester, his identity shall be testified by a person known to him and the person identifying shall affix his signature in token thereof.

82.2 What it does

Rule 82 answers the question the jurat otherwise leaves open: how does the attester know that the person swearing is the person the affidavit says he is. Where the attester already knows the deponent, nothing more is needed. Where he does not, a third person who is known to the attester must testify to the deponent's identity and sign the affidavit to that effect.
